Why do people litter?
Research has shown that the main factor in littering is attitude.
People feel it’s okay to litter in these situations:

Where litter is cleaned up periodically
(such as shopping center parking lots or theaters)

Where they feel no sense of ownership
(As in public parks, on city streets or rented homes)

Where there is already an accumulation of litter
(At illegal “dumps” or where litter is trapped)

Seven Main Sources of Litter
The Seven Main Sources of Litter ALL Result from Improper Handling:

Household Trash
Commercial and business trash
Loading Dock Refuse
Construction site material
Uncovered trucks hauling loose material
Motorists
Pedestrians

How can I help stop the spread of littering?
* Bag it! - Keep a litter bag in your vechicl & use it.
* Can it! - Hold on to trash until you can put it in a trash can. Trash thrown into the back of a pickup ends up as litter on the roads and where you live.
* Cover it! - Cover your truck when hauling things in order to make sure your load reaches its destination.
* Secure it! - Place all household waste in securely tied bags and put it in containers with tight fitting lids.
* Sweep it! - Check the yard, sidewalks, and curb areas of your home or business daily. Pick up any litter and put it in the proper container.
* Recycle it! - Recycling paper, aluminum cans, bottles, etc. pays AND saves valuable natural resources and landfill space.
* Clean it! - Put your trash in trash receptacles before leaving parks and recreation sites.
* Organize! - Organize a neighborhood cleanup!
* Adopt! - Adopt-A-Highway!
* Report! - Call the Litter Hotline to anonymously report drivers littering from their vehicles. You must report the car's tag number and description, the time and date.
